This National Geographic Article from 2012 is about the ‘ smuggling tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip’ . No mention of ‘Terror Tunnels’
“The tunnels of Gaza are a lifeline of the underground economy . For many Palestinians, they have come to symbolize ingenuity and the dream of mobility.”
It turns out that Israel has known about the ‘terror tunnels’ since at least 2007 – they were not just something they ‘came across’ in the course of the campaign.
Israel’s Comptroller sounded alarm on Gazan terror tunnels in 2007 By YONAH JEREMY BOB 07/31/2014 00:34
“Despite perceived overall success in Operation Protective Edge domestically, heavy criticism has already been directed against the political and security establishments regarding the IDF being unprepared for the scope of the Hamas tunnel threat, with both leaking off-the-record attacks on the other to shift blame….But those claiming the intelligence sector did not warn them of the scope of the problem must deal with the 2007 report which said unequivocally that the entire defense establishment had been part of an “ongoing failure.”
This article even claims that Hamas used child labour to build the tunnels with 160 of them dying (!!??) and it was published in Dec 2011
“The paper, titled Gaza’s Tunnel Phenomenon: The Unintended Dynamics of Israel’s Siege says that little had been done to stop the phenomenon of child labor during the digging of the tunnels by Hamas in Gaza. In December 2011, the paper’s author Nicolas Pelham accompanied a police patrol in Gaza and reported that “nothing was done to impede the use of children in the tunnels, where, much as in Victorian coal mines, they are prized for their nimble bodies.” “At least 160 children have been killed in the tunnels, according to Hamas officials,” Pelham stated”
Yesterday Israel destroyed the ceasefire because they wanted to find their ‘captured’ soldier – Only he wasn’t. He’d been killed in a ‘Friendly fire’ air strike the day before and there was no ‘body’ to find.
Hamas had denied it was holding the 23-year-old Lt Goldin captive, saying it did not know the soldier’s whereabouts. The military wing of the Islamist group said it had lost contact with some fighters in the area where Israel said the soldier had been seized. It said it believed the fighters and possibly Lt Goldin had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. It is understood the army came to its conclusion after examining DNA evidence, reports the BBC’s Bethany Bell in Jerusalem. No body has been found.
The original Israeli Justification for this war – Hamas ‘murder’ of 3 Israeli teens who were originally thought to be kidnapped- turns out not have been true
When the bodies of three Israeli teenagers, kidnapped in the West Bank, were found late last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not mince words. “Hamas is responsible, and Hamas will pay,” he said, initiating a campaign that eventually escalated into the present conflict in the region. But now, Israeli officials admit the kidnappings were not Hamas’s handiwork after all.
Even Time Magazine is now weighing in on the propaganda – apparently Hamas is ‘cheating’ on the casualty figures.
How Hamas Wields Gaza’s Casualties as Propaganda Steven Stotsky July 29, 2014 Hamas, the terrorist group controlling Gaza, endeavors to turn Israel’s military superiority to its own advantage by portraying the Israeli response to intense rocket and mortar fire as disproportionate and indiscriminate. In doing so, it hopes to turn public opinion against the Jewish state, as well as bolster its own standing at the expense of the Fatah-led Palestinian National Authority in the West Bank. Fatality figures provided by Hamas and other groups should be viewed with suspicion. Not only do Israeli figures cast doubt on claims that the vast majority of fatalities are non-combatants, but a careful review of Palestinian sources also raises doubts.
